Yes you can recover data from a drive if it is not wiped. But when the system wipes the free space it over write the space with some sequence of bits. If it is wiped, there is almost nil possibility to recover it. Again you have to make sure that you have not overwritten the space.
If above conditions are satisfied, then the data is still there with out a reference to it in file allocation table. Then if we read the space we can recover the data, even if it is formatted.
There are many tools available for it. I like PC Inspector to recover files. You may try it.
